Homo sapiens. What an inventive, invincible species. It's only a few million years since they crawled up out of the mud and learned to walk. Puny, defenceless bipeds. They've survived flood, famine and plague. They've survived cosmic wars and holocausts. And now, here they are, out among the stars, waiting to begin a new life. Ready to outsit eternity. They're indomitable.

'Cause you don't need to own the universe, just see it. Have the privilege of seeing the whole of time and space, that's ownership enough.

Life in general
Answers are easy. It's asking the right questions which is hard.

Don't cross your bridges before they're hatched.

First things first, but not necessarily in that order.

To the rational mind, nothing is inexplicable; only unexplained.

Sarcasm's an adjustive stress reaction.

An apple a day keeps the... Ah, never mind.

The illusion is always one of normality.

"Mastery of English?" Well, I'd reverse the roles, personally: it's English that has mastered me.

Power
Ten million years of absolute power. That's what it takes to be really corrupt.

The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don't alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views. Which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.

We shall become all-
-powerful! Crush the lesser races! Conquer the galaxy! UNIMAGINABLE POWER! UNLIMITED RICE PUDDING! Etcetera! Etcetera!

Cleverness
You're a classic example of the inverse ratio between the size of the mouth and the size of the brain.

I read a lot.

Well, to be fair I had a couple of gadgets he probably didn't, such as a teaspoon and an open mind.

Good looks are no substitute for a sound character.

Living
Sleep is for tortoises!

Sounds healthy, but exceedingly dull.

There's no point being grown-up if you can't be childish sometimes.

If you call that being nearly killed, you haven't lived yet.

You know how it is; you put things off for a day and next thing you know, it's a hundred years later.

Love has never been noted for its rationality.

For some people, small, beautiful events are what life is all about.

Anybody remotely interesting is mad in some way.

The thing is…time travel is like visiting Paris. You can't just read the guidebook; you've got to throw yourself in. Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, get charged double and end up kissing complete strangers.

Everybody knows that everybody dies. But not every day. Not today. Some days are special. Some days are so, so blessed. Some days, nobody dies at all. Now and then, Every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair and the Doctor comes to call, everybody lives.

When you're a kid, they tell you it's all "grow up. Get a job. Get married. Get a house. Have a kid, and that's it." But the truth is, the world is so much stranger than that. It's so much darker. And so much madder. And so much better.

Some people live more in twenty years than others do in eighty. It's not the time that matters, it's the person.

A longer life isn't always a better one. In the end, you just get tired; tired of the struggle, tired of losing everyone that matters to you, tired of watching everything you love turn to dust. If you live long enough, Lazarus, the only certainty left is that you'll end up alone.

There is no indignity in being afraid to die, but there is a terrible shame in being afraid to live.

A straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting.

One must always accept the unexpected.

Death
The universe has to move forward. Pain and loss, they define us as much as happiness or love. Whether it's a world, or a relationship... Everything has its time. And everything ends.

Everything must come to dust. All things. Everything dies.

It is never easy to die.
